Festive Presentation of the World Championship Baton at the Border
German Icelandic horse riders officially hand on the World Championship baton to Denmark and Danish riders at the border crossing Wilmkjerweg/Kristiansmindevej, Padborg
Saturday, July 18th at 2 pm
In connection with a World Championship for Icelandic horses, it is an old tradition to have a relay ride from the country that hosted the previous World Championship to the new host country.
In 2013, the World Championship was held in Berlin, Germany, and this year, Herning, Denmark, is going to host the WC2015 during week 32.
About 20 German riders and their Icelandic horses will arrive at the border crossing Wilmkjerweg/Kristiansmindevej, Padborg. Here they will meet 24 Danish riders who are ready to continue the relay ride from the German/Danish border to Herning. In Herning, the ride will end, and the baton will be handed to the mayor of Herning, Lars Krarup, at the official opening of the World Championships 2015 on August 5th.
The festive ceremony of handing on the baton to Danish Icelandic horse riders will be accompanied by speeches held by Lone Høgholt from the Association of Danish Icelandic Horses, Arne Bondo from the Danish Outdoor Council, and official representatives from the Association of German Icelandic Horses.
The relay ride is a greeting from the non-professional riders to the professional riders who are going to compete at the World Championships. At the same time, it is a tribute to the Icelandic horse, a versatile horse breed, loved by people of all ages and used for very different purposes.
This year’s relay riders left from Brandenburger Tor in Berlin on June 21st. From this day on, the participating riders have ridden between 25-35 kilometers a day, and every morning the baton has been handed on to new relay riders.
In total, the distance from Berlin to Herning is 610 kilometers. The relay ride will arrive in time in Herning for the official opening of the WC2015 which will take place on Wednesday, August 5th 2015.
The six Nordic countries have joined together to make the World Championships 2015 happen. The city of Herning in Denmark is going to host the event in which, riders and horses from 17 countries are going to take part.
